The year started with a bang at the Transportation Research Board (TRB) 2026 Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., an event that hosts over 15,000 people from around the world. Topics of interest included:

  • A Focus on Safety and AI: A major takeaway was the significant presence of safety companies, highlighting a boom in technology aimed at accelerating and amplifying roadway safety programs. This trend is closely tied to the industry’s broader focus on automation and AI.

  • Electrified Roads: Another intriguing development was the progress in electrified roads technology, already popular in Europe and China. This innovation could pave the way for charging commercial vehicles, and eventually personal vehicles, directly on the roadway (watch this video to learn more about it).

  • NAPA Meeting Insights: Maurice also attended the NAPA Annual Meeting. A highlight was the message from the owner of the Savannah Bananas, who emphasized the need to stay innovative, remain different, and focus on resolving customer pain points to foster stronger partnerships.

Industry Trends: Balancing the Mix

There’s a continuing trend in the industry: the move from piloting to implementing Balance Mix Design. Companies are shifting focus from simply finding a number to actively getting the necessary equipment to run tests throughout the year, from mix design season to QC during production months. The consistent emphasis on AI and safety also remained a focus at localized shows.
